Our family has just purchased a home in the beautiful community of Winter Oaks, in Winter Garden, Florida. Just west of Orlando, Winter Garden and its sister community of Oakland are in many ways like a time machine to Old Florida — except with central air! Ancient live oaks line the sidewalks, with some streets bending in deference to the venerable giants. Lake Apopka, the second largest lake in Florida, forms the northern boundaries of the towns. A walking/biking trail (the West Orange Trail) connects the two towns, winding through the historic Winter Garden downtown, with its parks, quaint shops, restaurants, theaters, pubs and wine bars.
From Winter Oaks it’s just a short stroll or bike ride to downtown, where you can refresh with ice cream or coffee, or the adult beverage of your choice, while you relax in the parks or tour the historic museum. The art deco style City Hall looks like it is straight from Gotham City, off the set of the newest superhero movie.
Altogether it’s truly stepping back to a time where neighbors spoke to each other, maybe even stopped by the front porch for a glass of iced tea. To a time when community meant something; when families had dinner together and walked and talked and lived together, instead of each person on their own personal electronic device, or plopped in front of the TV waiting for the next Law and Order rerun….
